Pearls of Wisdom

"Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls. When he found one of great value, he went away and sold everything he had and bought it." (Matthew 13:45-46).

In my business and marketing class I teach at TVCC, I have my students ask people whom they feel have lived a successful life for “pearls of wisdom.” These could be ideas, morals, or beliefs that they have chosen to live their life by, and that they feel have helped them achieve success. I tell my students to be sure and ask them not only “what to do,” but almost as importantly, “what not to do.” We'll call these "Pearls of Wisdom" and many may have been learned through adversity or trials. I don’t think many of us join or enter anything to experience failure, however many times as believers we are not walking in the victory (1 Corinthians 15:57; 1 John 5:4) that the Bible says we are entitled to.

As business men and women we obviously want our businesses to be successful, but the question is, "Where do we go to receive advice on how to accomplish that?" The Bible actually has some good advice on how to be successful:

“Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth, meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful (Joshua 1:8).

“Blessed is the man that walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law he meditates day and night. He shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that brings forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he does shall prosper” (Psalms 1:1-3).

“For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God” (Romans 8:14).

“For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God” (Romans 8:5-7).

The purpose of the “Pearls of Wisdom” section of this blog is to ask business men and women to share their pearls of wisdom (from what the Holy Spirit has revealed to them through scripture) of how to live their life and manage their business as sons/daughters of God. “If you love me, keep my commands. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever--the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you” (John 14:15-18). I will be asking others to share how the Holy Spirit has helped them accomplish success in their lives and businesses.
